The Lehigh Canal was constructed between 1827 and 1829 by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company to transport coal down the Lehigh River to the Delaware River and on to the growing consumer markets in Philadelphia via a connection with the Pennsylvania Canal (1831) in Easton. Coal could also be shipped directly to New York via a connection across the Delaware River to the Morris Canal (1825) through New Jersey. The Central Railroad of New Jersey: 1839-1976. The first railroad in New Jersey.
